rule of thirds and 180 degree rule

Rule of thirds:
The rule of thirds is a concept in video and film production in which the frame is divided into into nine imaginary sections, as illustrated on the right. This creates reference points which act as guides for framing the image.
This music video by Big Sean shows a really good example of the director using the rule of thirds. In this screenshot we can see big sean's whole body in a clear shot, but only taking up one third of the screen. In the other two thirds of the screen there is a big plain background with added effects such as moving shadows and light editing. This allows the viewers to be able to look at something else while the artist is performing, but the focus is always on the artist performing.

180 degree rule:
This music video by Big Sean also uses the 180 degree rule. In film making, the 180-degree rule is a basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene. An imaginary line called the axis connects the characters and by keeping the camera on one side of this axis for every shot in the scene.

single shot camera analysis

Gavin and Stacey

Gavin & Stacey is a British comedy television series sitcom that follows the long-distance relationship of Gavin  from Billericay in Essex, and Stacey from Barry in the vale of Glamorgan. Gavin and stacey is a serial. A serial is a format where the story never stops so it continues. Gavin and stacey are filmed in real places rather than being filmed in a studio on a set. This helps make the show seem more realistic and saves money. Some advantages of using the single camera technique is you get more character actions and close ups of the characters. This is effective because it really shows the viewers the characters emotions. Disadvantages of using multi camera techniques is that it is expensive. Multiple camera techniques take a long time to set up compared to single camera.

Ben and Kate

Ben and Kate is an American single camera situation comedy that ran on Fox from September 25, 2012, to January 22, 2013, as part of the 2012-2013 series. The show was produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Chernin Entertainment. Ben and kate is also a serial. This is a format where the story never stops and continues. Ben and kate is single camera.

NME

My top three music videos-NME

Janelle Monae - Cold War

The camera work used on this music video is single camera work. I can tell this because the camera stays on a close up of Janelle Monae's face during the whole video. I like this music video because it is an emotional video. I can tell this because she starts crying in the video which gives the video more of an emotional effect. The only editing they use in this music video is to play the soundtrack over the video making the video very simple. All of this will reduce the cost of the video.

Jay Z - big pimpin

The camera work used in this music video is multi camera work. I can tell this is multi camera work because there is a variety of different shots during the music video, it doesn't stay on Jay Z the whole time. This music video falls in the hip hop/rap genre. In a hip hop music video i would expect to see money, drugs, bling and lots of ladies. This music video shows all of this in it. I like this music video because there is a lot going on and it really shows what a real hip hop/rap music video should really be like.
Michael Jackson-Billie Jean

The camera work used in this music video is multi camera work. I can tell that this is multi camera work because there is a variety of different shots during the music video. The camera doesn't stay on Michael Jackson all the time because there is other actors in the video. This music video falls in the pop genre. In a pop video I would expect to see a lot of dancing. This music video shows this because Michael Jackson never stops dancing. I like this music video because it shows what I would expect to see from it and I like the fact the music video tells a story.
