6) research proposal

Research Proposal

There are 6 main reasons as to what the purpose of television idents are: identity, branding, marketing, packaging and re-packaging, scheduling and segmentation within scheduling. These things are very important to think about when thinking of the purpose of the ident, as they will give the audience a strong idea as to what the television channel is like.
Television idents are created with the purpose of giving the channel an identity in order for the specific channel to stand out from all others. Television idents are made to hopefully attract more viewers to the channel. Depending on the channel the ident being made has to fit in with the target audience of the channel and also fit in with the corporate identity e.g E4 is aimed towards the younger generation and they show this in their idents by using a fun vibrant colour (purple) and making their idents random and fun.
We are hoping that this ident that we are going to make for BBC One will have a positive effect on the target audience by making it appealing to them which will hopefully encourage them to come back to the channel and attract people who dont watch BBC One to the channel. Making this ident will allow me to learn more about tv channels and their idents and how to make an ident.
For the whole process of making my own ident i will be investing a lot of time for the research and the filming process. I will be investing 250 minutes a week. The filming process will begin when all of the research and planning is done on the 29/11/2013. There will be two of us making this ident.
For the research of this process i have looked at many different things such as different channels, corporate identity, risk assessment, budget, location recce etc. All of this research that i have done will allow me to make the best ident possible because i have gained a greater knowledge of television idents, how they are made and how they are made to appeal to the target audience. This will allow me to make an ident that looks professional by using professional softwares such as after effects and will allow me to make my ident as appealing to the target audience as it can be so i am able to attract more viewers to BBC One.

Emotional response of music videos

how do music videos show meaning?

Jar Of Hearts Christina Perri:
Lyrics/sound:
In the music video Not all of the lyrics sung by Christina Perri were interpreted. The words "cold" and "ice" are used quite a lot in the music video which suggests and shows that she is unable to love. During the music video there are points when the lyrics being sung become more aggressive and physical, but when this happens the backing dancers also begin to dance more aggressively to really show the emotion coming from the artist.
Mise-en-scene:
In this music video there is a lot of things we see that grabs our attention. Dancers, cars, smoke, buildings, road, white, stairs, trees, actors, phone box, rain and dark are all of the main things that stick out during the music video. There are different parts in the video where it switches between light and dark. This is to show the different emotions being sung. In this music video it really shows us the journey of love. The two main noticeable camera techniques used in the music video are the rule of thirds and the 180 degree rule. These camera techniques are very simple, but very affective. These simple camera techniques are used so that the viewer is able to really concentrate on the artist and have a connection.
Camera:
Loads of close ups of Christina Perri's face are used during the music video. This is so that the viewers are able to see the strong emotions coming from the artist. Slow panning is used in the music video. This is a really simple technique and is used so we are able to focus on the artist without getting distracted. Throughout the whole music video Christina Perri is the main focus point which suggests that the song being sung is about her.
Editing:
In the music video slow motion editing is used. This is used so that the music video shows more emotion. Some CGI is used in the music video when we see the soul being taken from the artists body. Fade in transitions are used in the music video which really shows and gives more emotion to fit in with the music video. There is a lighting change in the music video from dark to light. This shows us Christina Perri getting her heart back.

Well done you have described how Music videos create meaning. But you only have one example, and you must say exactly how they create the meaning.

3) style guide

Style guide

The logo
Where possible the BBc One logo should always appear in black red and white, but in situations where colour cannot be used it can appear as a mono in black. At no time should the colour of the logo be changed.
Log size
The BBC One logo has been designed to reproduce at a minimum height of 8mm, but there is no maximum reproduction size for the logo.

The logo position
where possible in print the BBC One logo should always appear in the top right hand corner of the page. The logo should be placed no closer than 10mm from the trimmed edge of the page.

The logo isolation area
The BBC One logo should always be surrounded by a minimum of 10mm area of space. This area is a minimum and should be increased whenever possible. The area of isolation ensures that text or other visual elements do not encroach on the logo.

colour
The BBC One logo uses black, red and white. There is not a specific pantone colour for each colour because there is loads of different shades of colours that are used in the logo meaning that it is hard to find a specific pantone number.

BBC One
The BBC and the One should be used in the same font and size and must have a space between them at all times. At no point should we see the two words sitting together.

18) development of ideas

ident ideas development

red character ident: This ident idea will be fun and appealing to the target audience. In this idea we have come up with a little red character that will be in a forest and decides to make a fire. After setting up and making his fire the red character pulls up a seat close to the fire. Whilst he is enjoying the fire the character starts to melt and falls on to the floor. As the character falls to the floor he melts in to the BBC One logo that me and my partner have created. In this there will be simple camera movement such as panning and a birds eye view to capture the final scene of the logo. The location of this ident will be set in a forest and will involve only one character. This ident will last between 15 to 20 seconds. This ident will be a stop motion animation and will be made from clay

raining ident: This ident is an idea that will be appealing to the target audience and was thought of to brighten up the viewers day. In this idea we have come up with a ident that will be set in a forest around a lake. The sky will be blue and clear and there will be little characters enjoying themselves around the lake. All of a sudden lots of dark gloomy clouds appear and it starts raining which causes all of the people round the lake to run away. The rain stops and the sun starts to break through the clouds causing all of the clouds to disappear allowing the sky to be blue and sunny again, but the sun that clears up the sky will be the BBC One logo that we have created. In this ident there will be simple camera movement such as panning and we will use a still shot that will slowly zoom in on the sun at the end slowly revealing the BBC One logo. The location of this ident will be set in a forest around a lake. The characters involved in this ident will be about 3 to 5 little men that we will make. This ident will last about 15 to 20 seconds. This ident will be a stop motion animation and will be made from clay

Dart board ident: This ident is an idea that will be more appealing to the older generation, but will also be appealing to the younger generation because it is a fun ident. The ident starts off with a close up on a character holding a dart looking at a dart board and the camera slowly moves around the character in line with the dart board. The character throws the dart at the board and as the dart is flying through the air in slow motion the camera always stays behind the dart following it until it hits the dart board, but on the dart board is the BBC One logo wich the dart ends up getting stuck in to. The camera then gets a close up on the logo and and the ident ends. In this ident we will use simple camera movements such as panning and and tracking which will make the ident look more complex and better. the location of this ident will be set in a pub with a dart board on the wall. This ident will only involve one character only and this is the character that will throw the dart. This ident will last for about 15 to 20 seconds and will be a stop motion animation that will be made out of clay.

14) questionaire and analysis

survey analysis

gender

Viewing time: from this question i asked what time of the day the public watched BBC One. From the results i can see that more people watch BBC One at night and a few people watch it in the morning. I have noticed that no one watches it during the day and i think this is because the public are at work, school or are busy doing something.

what do you expect to see in an ident: from the results i recieved from the survey i can see that the viewers expect to see the brands colour the most in an ident and they dont really expect to see picture. From this i am going to make sure that the ident i make must include the brand colour scheme because it is what the viewers want.

what do you think of the BBC One logo: From the results i recieved on the left i can see that most of the viewers think that the original BBC One logo shows off the brand well and some viewers think that the logo could be made better. From this i am going to make sure that the logo i design will be different but still shows off the brand.

do you watch other channels over BBC One: from this question i have found out that a lot of viewers like to watch other channels over BBC One. from this i am going to make sure that the logo and ident i create will be attractive and eye catching so that BBC One can attract more viewers.

Is your favorite television channel on BBC One: From the results i have recieved from this question i have found out that 60% of the viewers have a favorite television programme that is on BBC One
kk

age: from this question on my survey i have found out that BBC One is aimed towards everyone because as we can see from the pie chart BBC One has viewers from all age groups which suggests that all of the programmes viewed are age suitable for everyone. From this pie chart i must make sure that the ident and logo that i create must be suitable for all age groups and make sure that it doesnt offend anyone.

ethnicity: From the pie chart on the left we can see the ethnicity of the public who watch BBC One. From the results i can see that the number of white british, black british and asian are the same.

what time of the day is your favorite BBC One programme on: from the results on the pie chart to the left i can see that half of the public tune in to BBC One between 4 pm and midnight to watch their favorite BBC One channel. This may suggest that all of the best programmes are viewed at night because that is when the most people watch them because they are not at work, school etc.

15) interview and analysis

interview and analysis

  • what time do you like to watch BBC One and why?
  • explain what do you think about the BBC One logo?
  • what time of the day do you watch BBC One and why?
  • what is your favorite BBC One programme? why?
  • what do you expect to see in a television ident and why?
  • do you like the BBC One logo? if so why?
  • do you like to watch other channels than BBC One? why?
  • do you like to watch BBC One over other channels? why?
  • what is your favorite ident and why?
  • how does your favorite ident represent the channel?
I have decided to create this interview because the feedback that i will recieve from these questions will give me a great insight in to what the public would expect to see in an ident. This will allow me to create an ident that the public will like and attract them to the channel.
The first question in my interview was "what time do you like to watch BBC One and why?" The results that i recieve from this question will allow me to create an ident for that specific time of the day and allow me to create an ident around a specific channel that is on at that time of the day.
The second question in my interview was "explain what you think about the BBC One logo" this question is really helpful because the results that i recieve from this question will allow me to see what the public dont like about the original BBC One logo. This means that i am able to create a BBC One logo that the public will like and create an ident around the new logo design.
The third question I asked was "what time of the day do you watch BBC One and why?" From this question I am able to get results that will help when making my ident because I am able to see what time of day BBC One has the most viewers and then I am able to create a ident that is suitable for that time of day. the fourth question I asked was "what is your favourite BBC One programme and why?" this is a good question because I am able to find out what the most popular BBC One television programme is and create an ident based on the programme. The fifth question in the interview was "what do you expect to see in a television ident and why?" This question is really important because I am able to find out what the public actually want to see in a television ident. This means that from the feedback I receive, I am able to make an ident that will suit the wants of the public making the ident appealing to the public and attracting them to the channel. The sixth question in the interview was "do you like the BBC One logo? if so why?" This is an important question because I am able to find out if the public have any dislikes about the original BBC One logo which will able me to create a BBC One logo from what the public want and hopefully attract more viewers to the channel. The seventh question on the interview is "do you like to watch other channels over BBC One? why?" from this question I am able to find out what other channels viewers prefer to watch. This will allow me to look at those channels and analyse their logo and ident to see what competition I have when designing my logo and making my ident. The eighth question is "do you like to watch BBC One over other channels?" this question will allow me to see how many people enjoy BBC One more than other channels so I am able to attract more viewers through the ident and logo. The ninth question on the survey is " what is your favourite ident and why?" this is a useful question because it will allow me to look at other channels idents and see how they are attracting viewers. This will also help me when designing my ident. the tenth question is "how does your favourite ident represent the channel?" this question is very important because I will be able to find out how different channels represent their brand through their idents. This will help me when making my ident so I can represent BBC One properly.

21) proposal

proposal

concept or idea
for our final ident we have decided to come up with an idea that will be fun for the audience. we have decided to make an ident where there will be all clear blue skies and suddenly a lot of dark clouds come over. once all of the blue sky has gone it will start raining the BBC One logo which will land on the ground. once all of the rain has finished a sun will break through the clouds and the sun will be the BBC One logo that we have created. The location for the ident will be set in a forest by a lake and will include little characters that run away to avoid the falling logos from the sky. This animation will be made from clay.

purpose
From this ident that we are going to make we are hoping to have a really positive effect on the target audience. We are hoping to make this ident fun and appealing to the target audience and hope that the target audience see that this channel is fun and appealing to everyone making them want to come back and watch the channel. This ident will hopefully increase the amount of viewers the channel gets also. The meaning of this ident is to create joy and happiness. This is shown in the ident through the sun as it comes through at the end and clears up all of the bad gloomy weather that has made the little people by the lake run away. The sun fits in with the brand as well because the sun is round and bright which represents bringing everyone together.

key content

The length of this ident will be between 15 and 20 seconds. The setting for the ident will be in a forest set by a lake and will include little characters that run away when it starts to rain. for the sound of the ident we will include happy music for when the sky is a blue and clear, but when the storm comes the music will change and become a bit aggressive to fit in with the mood of the ident. when filming this ident the camera will be set on a tripod for the beginning so that we have a clear still shot and as the ident progresses camera movements will be included.

target audience
we are making this ident appeal to our target audience by making it suitable for any viewer because BBC One is aimed towards everyone. There is no specific age group and gender that this ident will be aimed towards because BBC One is aimed at everyone.
